Boozin' while cruisin' on your motorized scooter can give you a trip to jail.

To most of us, going to the grocery is a chore that people want to get over as quickly as possible. They hope to run in, get what they need, and be out of the store with as little hassle or time spent as possible. We all have shopping “horror” stories but few will top the one that involves a Rockdale County, Georgia man.

Getting a DUI is not something that most people think of when they plan their grocery trip. Unfortunately, Danny Wayne Mitchell found out the hard way that drinking, a grocery store, and a motorized wheelchair/ scooter aren’t a good combination. His recent trip to a Conyers, Georgia Kroger grocery store cost him a lot more than the things he had on his list.

Police responded to a call after an SUV hit a motorized scooter in the Kroger’s parking lot. When they arrived, they found Mitchell backing into the building and driving over plants. He was at the store to get a prescription filled but told police that he had taken the anti-anxiety medication Valium, the anti-depressant trazadone and “consumed a pint of alcohol.

Mitchell was given a breath test and was charged with DUI and public drunkenness. After being cited, he was taken to a local hospital. According to the police report, his electric wheelchair scooter was secured at Conyers Police Department for safe keeping.

In his statement, Mitchell explained his condition by saying, “I was out of medication so I had me a drink.” Hopefully, he learned that the label warning advising not to operate machinery or drink alcohol with medications is good advice.

Brendan has a word for those scooter dare devils traveling the aisles and parking lots of the stores in their areas. Be careful the next time you take that trip to the grocery. DUI is BAD for your health and your wallet.
