![]() Who knew it was against the law to talk too much? California has some crazy laws as one of Riverside's residents found out last month. 60 year old Karen Wright was speaking at public meeting of the Riverside City Council when she went over her allotted three minute speaking time. When politicians go over their allotted time, they are given a light or a buzzer. Award winners are played off by the band and even variety show contestants are given the hook. What was Karen given? Handcuffs and a police escourt out of the building. Now Brendan Spaar always likes hearing the rest of the story so it may not be as cut and dry as it sounds. Turns out they asked Karen to wrap up her statement but she refused. A sherrif deputy came up to her and asked her to take her seat and she refused. The woman became irate and the officers had to handcuff her and remove her so that the meeting could continue. While the arrest will probably be thrown out, there should be procedures in place for disruptive people. If the woman didn't respond to repeated attempts to end her statement, then you need to maintain order. That's what a sargent at arms is there for. He or she is there to remove disorderly people and Karen Wright was obviously disordly.
